Shootings in New Zealand

The Canadian Interfaith Conversation expresses sadness at the most recent outbreak of violence against Muslims at prayer in Christchurch, New Zealand. We offer our prayers and sympathy to those mourning the loss of loved ones in the shootings. We pledge ongoing support to all faith communities around the world that experience persecution in the name of another faith.

Vigils held in New Zealand and around the world demonstrate the determination to present, in the words of a statement from the Victoria Multifaith Society, "beauty ... in strong contrast to the ugliness of the event that inspired it."

The Canadian Council of Churches, in the prayer it posted in response to the shootings, reminds us that we all need forgiveness for "acts of violence and complicity, for what we have done and what we have left undone." Continuing in the words of that prayer, may we also experience the "gift of peace" that will allow us to "together work for justice and the well-being of all."
